2048is a deceptively simple number puzzle — slide tiles, combine matching pairs, try to reach the 2048 tile. But there's a real strategy behind reaching that goal consistently. This guide covers the rules, the key opening, and three tactics that will get you to 2048 in your first few sessions.
The rules in 60 seconds
- You play on a 4×4 grid. Every turn, a new tile (value 2 or 4) appears in a random empty square.
- Press an arrow key (or swipe on mobile) to slide all tiles in that direction as far as they can go.
- When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with double the value: 2+2=4, 4+4=8, 8+8=16, and so on.
- The game ends when the grid is full and no moves can merge anything. Goal: build the 2048 tile.
The #1 rule: keep your biggest tile in a corner
Pick a corner — bottom-right is the most common. Your goal is to never move the tile in that corner. Build your stack along the bottom edge with values descending left to right.
To do this in practice, only press Right and Down most of the time. Avoid Up at all costs — it's the move most likely to displace your anchor tile.
Strategy 2: build a snake
Once you've anchored your corner, organize the rest of the row in descending order. Then snake the next row in the opposite direction. Example layout near the bottom:

The pattern lets every tile have a clear merge path toward your anchor. When the 512 next to 512 (or 256+256) is ready, one swipe chains a huge cascade.
Strategy 3: don't panic when the board fills
Late game, the board will look terrifying — high-value tiles scattered, low-value tiles boxing you in. The trick is to look 2–3 moves ahead before committing. Mentally simulate both Right and Down before deciding. If neither cascades meaningfully, look for the move that empties the most tiles without breaking your snake.
Common mistakes
- Pressing Up out of habit. Up disrupts your column structure. If you find yourself reaching for it, the move you actually want is probably a thoughtful Down.
- Chasing every merge. Sometimes the right move is the one that doesn't merge but unblocks your structure for the next turn.
- Filling the corner tile. The moment a non-anchor tile lands in your designated corner, you've lost control. Plan moves that prevent this from happening.
Beyond 2048
